Why Veteran Trees Need Specialist Care

We recently had the privilege of working on a truly stunning veteran Cedar — a magnificent, ancient specimen set within the beautifully maintained grounds of a local hotel and wedding venue.

Trees like this are far more than just plants. They’re focal points of the landscape, living backdrops to weddings, events, and the everyday life of the property. Protecting them is a responsibility we take seriously.

Understanding the Tree’s History

As is typical for Cedar trees of this maturity, this veteran had shed some significant limbs over the years. This is a natural part of how older trees respond to age and stress — progressively shedding weight to stabilise themselves. Rather than being a sign of decline, it’s often a sign of a tree adapting and enduring. That said, it does create real risk that needs to be actively managed, particularly in a location with regular public footfall.

Our Approach: Careful Intervention Pruning

Our approach on this project centred on veteran tree management principles — working with the tree’s natural form rather than against it. The scope of work included:

  • Weight reduction on overextended limbs — targeting the branches most likely to fail under their own load, reducing leverage without stripping the tree of its character.
  • Deadwood removal — carefully clearing accumulated deadwood from within the canopy to reduce the risk of falling material, particularly important given the venue’s use for events and outdoor gatherings.

Every cut was considered. With a tree of this age and significance, it’s not about tidying — it’s about understanding how the tree works and making precise interventions that serve its long-term health. All work was carried out in accordance with BS3998:2010 Recommendations for Tree Work, as it is on every project we undertake.

Why Veteran Trees Need Specialist Care

Veteran trees like this Cedar are irreplaceable. They can’t be fast-tracked or replanted — their age, history, and ecological value are simply not replicable. Ancient Cedars in particular are known for their broad, sweeping canopy architecture and their tendency to compartmentalise decay rather than succumb to it, but they do require knowledgeable hands at certain stages of their life.

Our veteran tree care service is specifically designed for trees at this stage — where the goal isn’t removal or aggressive reduction, but thoughtful stewardship. That means assessing each individual tree, understanding its structure, and building a management plan around what the tree actually needs.

The Bigger Picture

The aim is always the same with trees like this: to support longevity, manage risk, and allow these incredible features of the landscape to be enjoyed for many more years to come.

For a hotel and wedding venue, a tree of this stature is genuinely part of what guests come to experience. Seeing it framed in a ceremony photo, or catching it at dusk from a bedroom window — these moments matter. Our job is to make sure those moments keep happening safely, for as long as possible.

If you have a veteran or mature tree on your property that you’d like assessed, we’d love to help. Get in touch with the team to book a site visit.
